Every year Snowflake Ski Club in Westby, WI holds an annual ski jumping tournament. The event hosts world renowned international athletes that compete jumping off a large hill. Often traveling down the jump with speeds in excess of 50 MPH flying for hundreds of feet. Every year the gift shop sells around 100 shirts and almost always are sold out in a weekend. To help maintain cost to buyer and production I have been designing the shirts almost exclusively in black and white. For more info visit https://www.snowflakeclub.org/
Founded in 1922, this year the ski club celebrated it's 97th anniversary. I'm starting to do designs that are more retro in feel to setup a special 100th anniversary design in 2022. The inspiration from this design comes from the speed ski jumpers face mixed with the speed from classic Formula 1 racing posters.
This year's shirt was inspired by the idea of celebration. For the weekend of the event, Westby, Wisconsin shuts down and many people are seen around the local bars and restaurants talking about the days activities. I designed this shirt with the idea of the fun loving patron in mind.
Experimenting with the idea of a more typography based design. This shirt was designed to be bolder, more impactful and different from what we've done before.
Ski Jumping has deep seeded roots in Norway. The ski jumper silhouette is made up of elements from Norwegian culture. Vector tracings of ski jumpers mid-air, winter gear and the Norwegian coat of arms are just a few of the many small pieces included in the design.
My first design working with the ski club. I thought the idea of ski jumping must be amazing to watch. Which is where the idea of the scene in the goggles came from.
